Our Artists

April Green
Derrock Burnett
As a metalsmith deeply influenced by the mystique of ancient Egypt, my work represents a
fusion of modern artistry and timeless cultural heritage. Each jewelry piece I create is an
intimate dialogue with history, where the intricate details and forms echo the
craftsmanship of a civilization renowned for its spirituality, aesthetics, and sophistication. I
am particularly inspired by the symbols of protection, transformation, and the connection
between the earthly and the divine that permeate ancient Egyptian art.
In addition to jewelry, I create small lost wax cast sculptures that reflect my fascination
with form and texture. These sculptures serve as exploration beyond adornment, allowing
me to bring to life three-dimensional interpretations of the themes that inspire me. The
process of lost wax casting is both ancient and transformative, mirroring the very essence
of my artistic mission—to transform raw materials into vessels of meaning that transcend
time.
Ultimately, my work is an invitation to engage with the rich tapestry of history through the
lens of modern craftsmanship. I hope that each piece, be it jewelry or sculpture, serves as
a reminder of the enduring allure of ancient cultures and the stories they continue to tell in
our contemporary world. Through my artistry, I aspire to bridge the past and present,
igniting curiosity and appreciation for the beauty that has shaped our shared human
experience.
My artwork delves into contemporary African-American portraiture as a reflection of black identity. I expand upon these images by integrating references to black experiences in America and the African diaspora. Through my work, I engage with notions of diversity within blackness, drawing inspiration from the realms of graffiti, abstraction, African heritage, urban landscapes, and hip-hop culture. I repurpose materials and juxtapose various elements, blending traditional and alternative supports. My aim is to reclaim agency for the black image, examining into both the public and private dialogues of black culture influenced by our chosen aesthetics.
